Consumer Alert — Cyber Frauds and Safe Digital Practices
It has come to the attention of Respo Financial Capital Private Limited that fraudsters are using social media, phone calls, and other methods to deceive the public and steal personal or financial information. These criminals seek data such as user IDs, login or transaction passwords, OTPs, ATM/debit or credit card details, including CVV and expiry date, as well as other sensitive information.
Fraud methods currently observed include:
- Vishing: Phone calls impersonating banks, NBFCs, e-wallets, or telecom operators that ask you to share confidential information, for example by claiming that KYC updates are required or that your account/SIM will be unblocked.
- Phishing: Spoofed emails, SMSs, or messages that appear to come from your financial provider and contain links or forms intended to capture your credentials.
- Remote-access scams: Invitations to install apps or software that then allow access to data on your phone or computer.
- UPI collect-request misuse: Fake payment requests that urge you to “Enter your UPI PIN” to release funds.
- Fake contact numbers and social media pages: Fraudulent phone numbers and fake pages displayed on search engines or social platforms.
How to Protect Yourself — Safe Digital Transaction Practices
- Never share confidential credentials. Do not disclose login IDs, passwords, OTPs, PINs, CVV, card numbers, UPI PIN, or loan account details to anyone, including callers who sound official.
- Treat unsolicited KYC or account-blocking calls/emails suspiciously. Fraudsters often ask you to click a link to “update KYC” or “prevent account blocking.” Do not use links in such messages; instead, visit the official website or call the verified branch number.
- Avoid unknown apps. Do not download or install apps from untrusted sources, as they may give attackers access to your device and data.
- Verify contact details from official sources. Do not rely on phone numbers shown in search results or social pages without checking the company’s official website or your account statements.
- Check URLs carefully. Look for misspellings or unusual domain names; use websites that start with “https” and trusted apps only. If you suspect a message is fraudulent, contact the local cybercrime police or your service provider.
- Act immediately on unexpected OTPs or debit alerts. If you receive an OTP or SMS for a transaction you did not authorize, notify your bank or e-wallet provider at once and block all debit channels, including UPI.
- Protect linked email accounts and use unique passwords. Do not reuse the same password across e-commerce, social media, and banking accounts, and do not access banking services over public Wi-Fi.
- Beware of “too good to be true” offers. Do not transfer money or share details based on promises of foreign remittances, commissions, lottery winnings, or similar claims.
- Monitor your accounts regularly. Check emails, SMS alerts, and account statements, and report any unauthorised transactions immediately so your provider can block cards/accounts and limit losses.
Report Fraud
If you encounter suspicious activity or have been defrauded, report it immediately to local police, the Cyber Crime Cell, and your telecom regulator, and inform your bank/NBFC/e-wallet provider.
